The Problems of Tourism

Currently, the tourism industry is one of the world’s fastest growing industry across the globe. It is anticipated that this industry employs millions of people around the world. Tourism can bring a lot of social and economic benefits especially in rural areas and in developing nations. Various countries benefit from the revenues they collect from tourism by attracting tourists with their unique historical monuments, nature beauty, and man-made wonders. As a result, this will increase the country’s economy through the cost of accommodation, food, and transportation costs for the tourists (Cole & Morgan, 2010). For instance, Dubai is one of the most famous tourist sites in the world that receive an enormous number of visitors hence creating employment opportunities for many people.

Despite these benefits, tourism industry also has a plethora of challenges and drawbacks. For instance, tourist behavior can have a detrimental effect on the quality of life of the host society or community. Crowding and congestion, prostitution and increased crime rates, drugs and alcohol problems are some of the challenges associated with tourism (Okorafor, 1995). A large number of tourist visiting may infringe on human rights with the locals being displaced from their land to create room for setting up new hotels. Apart from the mentioned, interaction with tourists may also lead to erosion of traditional cultures and values (Smith, 1992).

In conclusion, the tourism industry has a plethora of benefits to the economy of every nation. However, despite creating employment opportunities and other advantages, this industry has a few limitations. Tourism can have detrimental effects on the quality of life of the host community which may lead to erosion of the traditional cultures and values. Additionally, this industry may also result in immorality in the society in the form of increased crime rates and prostitution in the society
