Can you pipe on fondant?
Piping can be done with most any icing, but I prefer to use royal icing if I am piping on fondant and Swiss meringue buttercream if I am piping on buttercream.

Lacking an airbrush try powdered food coloring. Many well stocked supply shops carry it. Get some brown, and as you want it to lighten up farther from the edges, mix in some cornstarch.

What can I use instead of edible glue?
Combine warm water and ball of gum paste in a small container. Use a fork or small whisk to break up the ball of gum paste, so that it dissolves completely. You can also just set the container aside and allow the gum paste to dissolve on its own.
