How do threadworms look like?
They look like pieces of white thread. You might also see them around your child’s bottom (anus). The worms usually come out at night while your child is sleeping.

Sometimes the worms are visible in the anal area, underwear, or in the toilet. In stools, the worms look like small pieces of white cotton thread. Because of their size and white color, pinworms are difficult to see. The male worm is rarely seen because it remains inside the intestine.

Threadworms lay their eggs around an infected person’s anus (bottom), usually at night. Along with the eggs, the worm also secretes a mucus that causes itching. If the eggs get stuck on the person’s fingertips when they scratch, they can be transferred to their mouth or on to surfaces and clothes.
Can threadworms come out of your skin?
Also, threadworm eggs can survive for up to two weeks outside the body. They fall off the skin around the anus and can fall on to bedding, clothes, etc.
How do you tell if you’ve got worms?
These could be symptoms of something like roundworm, hookworm or tapeworm….See a GP if you:
- find a large worm or large piece of worm in your poo.
- have a red, itchy worm-shaped rash on your skin.
- have sickness, diarrhoea or a stomach ache for longer than 2 weeks.
- are losing weight for no reason.
How do I know I have worms?
Most of the time, there aren’t any. You might have anal itching, especially at night. You could also have stomach pain, nausea, or vaginal itching. Sometimes pinworms can be seen around your anus or on your underwear or bed sheets about 2 to 3 hours after you’ve gone to bed.
Do threadworms move in poo?
Threadworms look like thin, white, cotton threads. Sometimes you can see them in faeces (stools or motions) in the toilet. If you cannot see threadworms in the faeces, but suspect your child has threadworms (if they have an itchy bottom), try inspecting the child’s anus.
How do you get rid of threadworms overnight?
Shower daily in the morning to remove pinworm eggs that may have been deposited overnight. Change your underwear and clothing daily. Use hot water in the washing machine and hot air in the dryer when laundering bedding, clothing, and towels that may contain pinworm eggs.
What time of night do pinworms come out?
The female adult worms leave the anus in the middle of the night while the person is sleeping to deposit her eggs around the skin of the perianal region. The eggs become infectious within a couple of hours after being deposited and can survive for about 2 weeks outside the host.
