How do you dye walnut sapwood?

- Select a dye colour of your choice.
- If it’s a water-soluble dye, dilute it with water and if it’s an alcohol-soluble dye, dilute with denatured alcohol by 50%.
- Apply the diluted dye in 2-3 coats on both the heartwood and sapwood of your wood piece.
- Use a thin coat of shellac and seal the wood.
What color is walnut sapwood?

Walnut sapwood is white, but is not too wide, so does not appear on too many pieces of lumber when the logs being sawn are large. Unfortunately, today log size is decreasing at the sawmill, so sapwood is becoming more prevalent. Most uses do not like the white sapwood, but want the rich, chocolate-colored heartwood.
What stain looks best on walnut?
Plain Waterlox looks good on walnut but a little tone might make it nicer, so experiment if you have some scraps cut from the table to see if the overall look is improved by a little tint of stain in the finish or on the wood before finishing.
Can walnut be stained darker?
You can apply boiled linseed oil or oil-based varnish directly to the raw wood, which will make it much darker, or you can apply a stain. Which stain you choose will control the final color, but it’s still likely to be rather monochromatic.
