They have no front end flop at low speeds. They also have heavier frames and a much better suspension to soak up the bumps in the road. I’ll give it to you that the Twin Cam Fatboys ride pretty smooth due to the B motor and you can tour on one, they still ain’t a Touring bike.
Is a Softail Deluxe a good first bike?
I think the Deluxe is a GREAT choice for you. I bought mine in Oct after having been out of riding for 10+ years, and it’s a very easy and fun bike to ride. The low center of gravity, short seat height, and FL front end w/fat tire make it real nice. It’s also pretty easy to maneuver at slow speeds.
What is the difference between a Road King and a Softail Deluxe?
The softail was designed for a “look.” It was supposed to look like the old hard-tails while still having a rear suspension. Both are good looking bikes, but the Road King has a much superior rear suspension and is in my humble opinion a much better machine for longer rides.

While these two bikes are for the most part identically equipped, the Softail® Deluxe does get an electronic throttle control, with standard cruise control. The Heritage Softail® Classic is not offered with cruise control. However, both come standard with anti-lock brakes and can be had with a security system.
