How do you protect a submersible pump?
Setting the motor protection on a submersible pump
- Set overcurrent release to the stamped maximum motor current.
- Let the pump run for half an hour at normal power.
- Set the overcurrent release successively lower until the trip point is reached.
- After that, set the overcurrent release 5% above this trip point.
How do you protect a submersible pump from lightning?
The best method of protection is to open your breakers during a storm or put in a line isolation contactoor that is open all the time except exactly when the pump must run. A lightning hit must be almost direct to make it jump an air gap.
How can I protect my pump?
The most reliable way to protect your pump against dry running is to install external conductivity probe with a switch. This system shuts off the pump before the pump draws in air, providing 100% protection against damage.
Can I leave submersible pump underwater?
A submersible water pump has the same function as the standard water pumps of draining water. However, it comes with an added advantage of the ability to be placed even underwater and still function properly. Some pumps work only when full submerged underwater, while others work even when placed on a dry surface.
How do I stop my pump from drying out?
To avoid the inconvenience of the dry running you can simply install a dry running protection device which stops the pump immediately in case of danger of dry-running.
Can lightning damage a well pump?
Recent loss experience has shown us that lightning damage can occur on submersible pumps that have surge protection equipment installed in the control panel arrangement. Deep-well submersible pumps damaged by lightning can be very expensive to remove and repair. They can also cause loss of service.
Can a well get hit by lightning?
It’s rare that a water well will receive a direct strike from a storm, but it’s possible, even with protective measures. With pumps being electrically powered, they are susceptible to power surges caused by lightning strikes.
How long can a submersible pump run without water?
How Long Can a Submersible Pump Run without Water? You will not cause any damage to the pump if it runs without water for less than 45 to 60 seconds will not cause any damage. You can run the pump dry for a few seconds if you are using it for tank transfer and you would like to empty the tank.
Do submersible pumps have thermal overloads?
Class 10 overloads are for submersible motors, and will trip within 10 seconds. Overloads are really to protect the electrical system from a shorted or overloaded motor. Thermal overloads are not good pump motor protection devices. By the time a thermal overload trips, damage has already occurred.
How do you protect well pump from running dry?
There are several manufacturers of submersible pump protectors that can be installed by qualified water well contractors that will protect your pump from running dry. Figure 2. What is a well pump saver?
The Model 233-P single-phase Pump Saver Plus is a pump monitor designed to protect single-phase pumps from dry-well, dead-head, jammed impeller, rapid cycle and overvoltage and undervoltage conditions. The Pump Saver Plus Model 233-P protects 230 volt, 2 or 3 wire, 1/3 to 1.5 hp pumps.
