Is Reaper non destructive?
Reaper is 100% non-destructive and I don’t think anyone plans on making it less than 100%. On a side note, one can set up a primary and secondary external editor so that double-click et al will open the file in that editor, edit, save, return to reaper.

You can turn Snap off (alt/option-S) then zoom in to the sample level and manually align. There’s an action called Toggle track zoom to maximum height, you can select the two tracks to be aligned and run that to make it visually easier.
