What oil can I use for RockShox?
Registered. rockshox uses maxima oil starting at 5wt and up.
What can I use in place of fork oil?
ATF is a good substitute for fork oil due to its anti-foaming properties. Many motorcycles used to specify ATF for the forks as stock. ATF is roughly equivalent to 7.5 weight fork oil, so will be a bit on the light side for any of the XJ series, but you might find it to be acceptable.
Can I use motor oil in RockShox?
I would not recommend doing it. Motor oils contain lots of additives that could have unknown side effects in a fork. Plus the advertised weight of lubricating oils is not an exact measure of viscosity. See here, scroll down to “Rockshox oil”.

Can you use Fox oil in RockShox?
If it’s a sealed damper and you’re using this oil for the lowers, then it’s fine. If you’re using an open bath damper where the oil from the lowers is also used for damper oil, then you do not want to mix them. It probably won’t break anything but you won’t get the same suspension feel as before.
Can I use Fox Float Fluid in RockShox air can?
For the air can, the Float fluid is just fine. Everyone uses nitrile seals.
Can I use motor oil in my forks?
If you want to ruin the performance of your damper, by all means use motor oil in there. Use shock oil for anything that is damping, and motor oil for the splash oil in the lowers.
Can you use regular oil for fork oil?
You should not use anything other than fork oil in your forks.
Can I use engine oil in MTB forks?
Manitou recommends 10W40 synthetic motor oil for the lube chambers at the bottom of the fork. I’ve also used 50 wt in those forks—3 yrs and fork works like new. For the damping chamber, always use some quality fork oil (or for open bath fork like marzocchi).
