Can you lay DITRA over plywood?
Ditra should be installed on plywood subfloors using modified thinset mortar, not unmodified. The difference between the two is that the unmodified is a mixture of Portland cement, sand and water retention agents. Modified thinset mortar adds latex polymers to increase its adhesion and strength.
Is Schluter Ditra worth it?
DITRA provides reliable waterproofing in interior and exterior applications. Its polyethylene composition protects the substrate from moisture penetration, which is particularly important in today’s building environment where most substrates are moisture sensitive.
Can you tile over plywood subfloor?
As a general rule, you can lay tile over plywood. However, you need to ensure the plywood subfloor is 1 and ¼ inch (3 cm) thick. It’s also recommended to use a cement backer board on top of the plywood, but some tilers make a cement backer board by hand.
Can you use Schlüter membrane on plywood?
Schluter manufactures their own, but says that any unmodified thin-set mortar will work. Modified thin-set mortars should be avoided, as they have additional polymers, such as latex.
Does unmodified thinset stick to plywood?
Thinset is the wet base that you first trowel on the plywood to make the tile stick. Higher latex content is essential for bonding to plywood. A quality unmodified thinset should be used and mixed with a latex additive.
Can you use Schluter membrane on plywood?
How do you attach DITRA to wood subfloor?
- Step 1: Gather Materials. Tile floors…
- Step 2: Know Joist Spacing.
- Step 3: Mix Modified Thin-Set.
- Step 4: Measure Floor Dimensions and Cut DITRA.
- Step 5: Dry Fit DITRA.
- Step 6: Clean & Dampen Wood Subfloor.
- Step 7: Apply Modified Thin-Set.
- Step 8: Embed DITRA Into Thin-Set.
What do you use under DITRA?
For example, to set DITRA over plywood or OSB, a modified thin-set mortar meeting the requirements of ANSI A118. 11 is used. To set DITRA over concrete or gypsum, Schluter-Systems recommends an unmodified thin-set mortar meeting the requirements of ANSI A118.
Do you need underlayment with DITRA?
In order to protect the integrity of the tile assembly, an underlayment that performs multiple functions is required. Schluter®-DITRA is specifically designed to allow the installation of ceramic and stone tile over any even and load-bearing substrate.
What do you put on plywood before tiling?
Can I tile onto plywood?
Under British Standards BS 5385 Part 1, plywood is not a suitable substrate for the direct fixing of wall tiles, therefore when tiling onto walls, a tile backer board is required.
