Thorald Gray-Mane is chained to the wall in the back of the room. Kill the Northwatch Interrogator to free him. He will grab a nearby weapon to protect himself before following the Dragonborn.

The only way for one to gain access to the keep is by force or the use of console commands. The other prisoners can be released by picking Master locks, or flipping the levers in the room. However once freed, they just stand there.

Which is better GREY Mane or Battle Born?
The Gray Manes support the storm Cloaks while the Battleborns support the Empire. But telling Idalof you support Battleborn allows you to get info for rescuing a Grey Mane during the Missing in Action quest. I think it may also add progress to your speech skill.
