How do you pack an ice sled?
How To Pack and Carry Ice Fishing Gear On a Sled:
- Carefully place your rods into the bag and enclose them.
- Place your remaining gear into the 5-gallon bucket.
- Place any gear that will not fit into the bucket in the empty space on the sled.
- Take hold of the sled and get going.
What is a Smitty sled?
Smitty Sleds are a simple design. If you have some basic woodworking tools you can build one in a few hours. I began by cutting 2-2×4 pieces to 6” lengths and 2 more to 7.5” lengths. The front 2×4’s are cut at a 45° angle so the top portion is 6” long, to match the back.
Do ice fishing sleds float?
Ice fishing sleds will float when the gravitational weight (downward force) is less than its buoyancy (upward force). Therefore, an ice sled will float if it weighs less than the amount of water it displaces. A smaller sled displaces smaller amounts of water and will float a lighter load than a larger sled.
Does a jet sled float?
Floats fine with all that. Would just say to get the bigger one. Kids also use mine to sled so it has seen some abuse. Also like to drag gear instead of pack it so I would say it is a nice piece of gear…
Does a Smitty sled really work?
Pulling a smitty sled is hands down easier then hauling a portable without one. Like Tinker said, I barely notice the sled at all on glare ice or hard packed snow. I did run into a week or so of 12-20″ drifts last winter. It sucked walking through it but the sled rode right over those drifts no problem.
Can you use water skis for a Smitty sled?
Re: What skis for Smitty Sled? If you can find them, old wooden water skis also work. Ive got a set of those under a jet sled and the work great.

I had good luck with jet sled this past season. Got my first deer last season and the sled made it an enjoyable experience. Floated fine with a deer across a smaller creek that was flooded.
